What Is a Discovery Session and How to Get the Most Out of One

Ever wondered what happens during a discovery session with a coach? Maybe you’ve even been tempted to book one, but held back because you don’t know what to expect, or you are afraid of getting into something you don’t want.

Let’s clear up the mystery.

Discovery sessions, also known as chemistry calls, clarity calls or exploration sessions are short (usually free) consultations between a coach and a prospective client (coachee). Their main purpose is to give both parties an opportunity to assess whether they'd be a good match to work together. This is usually via information sharing, questions and answers, and sometimes even a spot of coaching on the call, depending on the coach. They usually take place by phone or video call. However, some also happen over email or messenger or in person.

As every coach is different, every discovery session will be different too. However, there should be some standard expectations.

1. There is no obligation on either side to form a coaching relationship following a discovery session.

2. A discovery session is an opportunity for both coach and coachee to get to know each other, in order to make an informed decision and freely decide if they want to work together.

3. The prospective client gets clarity about what it's like to work with the coach: price, structure, mutual expectations, contractual details, approach, and experience.

If, at the end of the session, you aren’t clear about the above, or you feel pressured or uneasy, then it may be a sign not to move forward. Coaching can be challenging because it takes you out of your comfort zone, but the experience should be positive, and so should the discovery session. Trust your intuition, and use the following tips to help you leave a discovery session with all you need.

Tips for a Successful Discovery Session

Prepare for the session in advance: Do research on the coach, their services and what other clients say about them. Treat these calls as you would an enquiry with any other service provider. Think about what your objective for the session is, as well as for a potential coaching relationship. Get clear about what information you want to come away with. Have your relevant questions ready.

Do you expect to be coached on the call?: Don’t necessarily expect to be coached (or given training) on the call unless that has been offered. Some coaches do coach already during a chemistry call. I personally don’t. Anything that takes place during the session should be done transparently, with your knowledge and permission. If you feel uncomfortable at any stage, say so.

Be honest: Don't tell them what you think they want to hear. Start your potential coaching relationship as you mean it to go on: based on honesty, openness and trust. It serves you both. It is useful to be clear about your fears, desires, needs and expectations. That way both you and the coach can determine if they can support you.

Go in curious: Approach the session with an open mind - coaching is an eye-opening experience. Leave your own judgments behind, and allow yourself to get the most from this session.

Respect boundaries: Be clear about what your own boundaries are, and respect those of the coach too. Discovery calls are offered with a view to potentially working together. If you do not have any intention of hiring a coach at that time, then wait until you do. Discovery sessions aren’t the same as pro bono services. Most coaches have other resources that you can enjoy in the meantime.

Explore various options: You may have to have discovery sessions with several coaches before you find the right one for you. Don't feel guilty if you decide not to work together. You wouldn't stick with a hairdresser/gynaecologist/accountant who doesn't suit you; the same goes for coaches. No offence, just common sense! This will save you both time, energy and difficulty in the long run.

Enjoy: Make the most of the experience. If nothing else you come away with more clarity and some takeaways to help you in your coach search. Be proud that you are taking positive action for yourself and learning lessons along the way.
